Home Video Drone Buying Guide
Prepared October 20, 2026 · Numbers in brackets [n] refer to the Bibliography at the end.
Quick answer
Buy the DJI Mini 4K Fly More Combo (about $300 to $450). It is the most proven budget drone for steady home video: a 3-axis gimbal, GPS return-to-home, a 10 km rated video link, and three batteries for about 93 minutes of total flight [5, 10].
- Want more safety and range: the DJI Mini 4 Pro adds obstacle sensing on all sides and a 20 km rated link for about $760 list [7].
- Prefer a non-DJI brand: the Potensic Atom 2 matches the Mini 4K on most specs for about $330 to $480 [12, 13].
- Tightest budget: the Potensic ATOM SE gives you GPS and return-to-home for under $200, but no mechanical gimbal, so video is less smooth [3].
For a house, "going the distance" really means a stable link and enough battery to fly a few slow orbits, not miles of range. All of these clear that bar easily.
Comparison table
All four weigh under 250 g, have GPS and automatic return-to-home, and are sold in the US today. Prices are typical 2026 street prices before the September 2026 drone tariffs, so expect current listings to run higher.
| Drone | Typical price (USD) | Weight | Camera and stabilization | Rated flight time per battery | Rated video range | Obstacle sensing | Best for |
| DJI Mini 4K (top pick) [5, 10] | $299 drone only; about $300 to $450 Fly More Combo | 246 g | 1/2.3" 12 MP, 4K/30, 3-axis gimbal | 31 min (about 20+ real world) | 10 km | Downward only | Best value for smooth, reliable home video |
| Potensic Atom 2 [12, 13] | $329 drone only; about $440 to $480 Fly More | 249 g | 1/2" 48 MP, 4K/30, 3-axis gimbal | 32 min (about 22 to 27 real world) | 10 km | None | Non-DJI pick with Mini 4K level specs |
| DJI Mini 4 Pro [7] | About $760 list (drone and basic remote) | 249 g | 1/1.3" 48 MP, 4K/60 HDR, 3-axis gimbal | 34 min | 20 km | All directions | Most reliable and safest, if the budget stretches |
| Potensic ATOM SE [3] | About $199 | 246 g | 12 MP, 4K, electronic stabilization only | 31 min | 4 km (reviewers report less) | Downward only | Cheapest way to get GPS and return-to-home |
"Rated" numbers are lab figures. Real flights usually get 20 to 27 minutes per battery once wind and hovering are involved.
What to look for
A mechanical gimbal and GPS matter far more than range or megapixels for filming a house.
- 3-axis mechanical gimbal: keeps video smooth in wind. Drones with only electronic stabilization (like the ATOM SE) look noticeably shakier.
- GPS with return-to-home: holds position in a breeze and flies itself back if the signal drops or the battery runs low. Below about $150, most drones skip this and drift [8].
- Range: any drone with a 4 km or better link is plenty, since the law already requires keeping it in sight. A strong link mostly means fewer video dropouts near trees and roofs.
- Flight time: plan on 20 to 25 real minutes per battery. A Fly More Combo with three batteries is the best value add.
- Under 250 g: easier to carry, and recreational flyers skip FAA registration. The trade-off is less wind resistance than heavier drones.
- Obstacle sensing: worth paying for if you will fly close to the house, trees, or power lines. Only the Mini 4 Pro in this list has it all around.
Buying in the US right now
Every drone in the table is legal to buy and fly, but prices are rising and the newest DJI models are off limits.
- New DJI models are blocked. The FCC added DJI and other foreign drone makers to its Covered List on December 23, 2025, so drones launched after that date cannot be sold new in the US. That is why the newer DJI Mini 5 Pro had no official US launch; listings you see are gray-market imports with no US support [1, 6].
- Existing models are still fine. The Mini 4K, Mini 4 Pro, and other pre-December 2025 models remain legal to buy, fly, repair, and resell, and Amazon, Best Buy, and B&H still carry them [1].
- Tariffs took effect September 3, 2026. Most imported consumer drones, including DJI and Potensic, now carry a 25% duty. Stores with older stock may still sell at pre-tariff prices, but new shipments cost more, so a good in-stock price is worth grabbing [6, 9].
- Long-term support is the open question. With DJI shut out of new US sales, firmware, parts, and warranty support for older models could thin out over time. Buying spare batteries and propellers up front is cheap insurance [1].
Rules for flying over your own home
For fun flights over your own house, you need one free online test and a quick airspace check before each flight [2, 4].
- Pass TRUST. The FAA's Recreational UAS Safety Test is free, online, never expires, and you must carry proof when flying.
- Skip registration if under 250 g. Every drone in the table qualifies. A drone of 250 g or more needs a $5 FAA registration and Remote ID.
- Check the airspace first. Use an FAA B4UFLY app (such as Aloft). Near an airport you may need a quick LAANC authorization, which these apps grant almost instantly.
- Fly by the basics. Stay at or below 400 ft, keep the drone in sight with your own eyes, and avoid flying over people or moving cars.
- Mind local and neighbor rules. State and local laws on privacy and takeoff still apply, so keep the camera on your own property.
- If you live near Washington, DC: recreational flying is prohibited inside the DC Flight Restricted Zone (about 15 miles around Reagan National), and the wider surrounding area has extra restrictions. Check B4UFLY before buying.
If you ever get paid for footage (for example, a real estate listing), you need an FAA Part 107 certificate instead.
Budget extras and tips
Plan on spending roughly 30 to 40% on top of the drone for the extras that make it practical [8].
- Buy the Fly More Combo. Three batteries and a charging hub cost less as a bundle than separately, and one battery is only one or two passes over the house.
- Get a microSD card. A fast 128 GB card (V30 or better) handles 4K video.
- Add a landing pad and spare propellers. A pad keeps grass and dust out of the gimbal; propellers are the first part to chip.
- Consider damage coverage. DJI Care Refresh is no longer sold in the US, so a third-party protection plan is worth a look [11].
- Practice in an open field first. Learn the controls and test return-to-home before flying near the house, trees, or wires.
- Shoot simple moves. Slow orbits, a straight pull-back reveal, and a top-down shot cover most home video needs, and the built-in QuickShots modes do them automatically.
